Best truck tool boxes: types, brands, and how to choose

The best truck tool box is the one that matches how you load your bed: a crossover box for most pickups, side mounts for grab-and-go access, drawers if you need the whole bed floor to stay usable. Here is how the types compare and the brands we trust enough to sell.

Why put a tool box in the bed at all

A bed without storage turns every trip into a loose-cargo problem. A real truck tool box earns its spot four ways: it locks, so your tools stop riding home with someone else; it seals, so they stay dry and rust-free through snow and rain; it organizes, so the bed stops being a junk drawer; and it saves time, because the tool you need is where you left it.

Crossover tool boxes

The classic. A crossover box spans the width of the bed and rests on the side rails behind the cab, leaving the floor beneath it mostly open. It fits the widest range of trucks and holds the most gear per dollar. Low-profile versions sit below the rail line so they work with many tonneau covers. Our most-requested crossover lines are Weather Guard, UWS, and Better Built.

Side mount tool boxes

Side mounts run along the bed rail, which keeps tools reachable from the ground without climbing in. They pair well with a crossover box on work trucks that carry a lot of small hardware. Weather Guard and Buyers Products make the side mounts we install most.

Underbody tool boxes

For service bodies, flatbeds, and trailers, underbody boxes hang below the deck and keep the working surface clear. Buyers Products and Weather Guard cover this category well, and it is the standard answer for fleet and utility trucks.

Bed drawer systems

Drawer systems like Decked replace open bed space with weatherproof slide-out drawers under a load-rated deck. You keep a flat, usable bed on top and get organized storage underneath. They cost more than a metal box, and for tradespeople who live out of the truck they are usually worth it.

Specialty boxes

Gullwing lids, swing-out cases that pivot over the wheel well, and semi-truck frame boxes all solve narrower problems. If your setup does not fit a standard box, this is where we look next.

Brands we carry

We sell and install boxes from Weather Guard, Decked, UWS, Buyers Products, Better Built, Camlocker, Jobox, and Delta Consolidated. They earn their place differently: Weather Guard for jobsite security, Decked for drawer systems, UWS for low-profile aluminum, Buyers for flatbed and underbody work.

Fitting your truck

Box fitment depends on bed length, rail width, and wheel-well spacing, and it varies across the F-150, Silverado, Sierra, Ram, Tacoma, Tundra, Ranger, and Gladiator. Fleet buyers have the same conversation at scale: we outfit service bodies and multi-truck fleets with matched, keyed storage.
